Rejection of National Defenese Authorization Act

Type: Public Statement

Proposed by: Steven Vincent

History: amended version consented to at GA on Saturday 12/03/2011

WHAT:  Reject the National Defense Authorization Act

Occupy Los Angeles Rejects the National Defense Authorization Act

Occupy Los Angeles demands that President Obama veto the National Defense Authorization Act.  The legislation includes provisions which destroy the Constitutional rights of Habeas Corpus and Due Process.  American citizens and all people everywhere have the inalienable right to contest their imprisonment and a civilian trial by jury. We reject this and all legislation which abridges these rights as well as the false belief that doing so will make the nation more secure.  Additionally, the bill funds wars that the majority of Americans oppose.  These endless, senseless wars only serve the Corporatist interests of the 1% and we oppose this and all legislation which enables and perpetuates them.

=============================================

I propose that this be presented as an EMERGENCY PROPOSAL for immediate consideration by the General Assembly on Friday, December 2.
I would consider this an Emergency Proposal because of the deep gravity of the issue involved and the fact that we have a small time window to make the Demand.  We need to make our presence felt on the debate on this BEFORE it is history and over and done with.  If we wait then we will have missed our window of opportunity.

HOW:
Issue a demand that President Obama veto the bill with a statement of our reasons.
Once adopted, it should be immediately disseminated to all news media
We should disseminate this to all other Occupys and ask them to follow suit
We should hold a press conference at the beginning of the Saturday December 3 General Assembly
We should blow up a copy of the Demand and have the General Assembly sign it
We should then Federal Express the signed Demand to President Obama at the White House
WHY:

The bill is a direct attack on our movement as it will be used to silence dissenters.  It is also our moral responsibility to speak out promptly on such issues of grave national importance to influence and participate in the national debate.  We also need to let the public and the media know that we will be taking a clear stand on such matters going forward.

OK. OLA is not rejecting the National Defense Authorization Bill. That’s Bullshit, and if we put that statement out, everyone will be rolling in the aisles laughing at how fucking stupid we all are. We reject, specifically, Section 1031 of S.1253, the National Defense Authorization Act. This is the section which you are referring to. This is the section which directly affects civil liberties and human rights. You should probably read it to figure out how they do that. It doesn’t sound, from this proposal, that you have read the section. The section is short, but it’s a long fucking act. Be specific.

The rest of your proposal is fine, but I would have an issue with it as representative of our movement, as it doesn’t say anything particularly clever, astute, new or interesting about us and our political savviness. Sure, blow up a rejection of Section 1031, send it to the President and Congress and Senate and MSM. It’s important we reject it as a movement, though you have a massively inflated idea of our political weight in these matters. It’s only 3 days ago they fucked with the First Amendment with pigs in riot gear, a bit of paper ain’t gonna make them stop with this, particularly not if you can’t even phrase it correctly.
